MCR/SAR Training Manager Tom McGahan holds a Healthcare Security Officer Training Day at the Mater Hospital

July 2, 2019 |

Following the recent success of the MAPA training for Patient Support Officers at St James’s Hospital, MCR/SAR Training Manager Tom McGahan provided Healthcare Security Officer training to SAR Security Staff at the Mater Hospital.

The main focus of this specialised training is to enable SAR staff to recognise potentially aggressive or dangerous behaviour and deal with it in a calm and safe way.

During the Healthcare Security Officer training at the Mater Hospital, trainer Tom McGahan placed a big emphasis on Disengagement and Holding Skills, training SAR staff to use Safe, Effective, Appropriate and Transferable techniques (S.E.A.T) when dealing with patient aggression.

By the end of the training session, SAR Security Staff had developed the necessary skills to safely disengage from situations that may present risks to themselves, the person(s) receiving care, or others, which will therefore result in a safer hospital environment for patients, staff and visitors alike.
